Taking a major step forward towards projecting the PGPM programme amongst industry participants, SPJIMR has created an advisory board consisting of high ranking, seasoned people from various organizations spanning across multiple verticals. The first successful meeting of the board members was held on 9^th October 2009 at J.W. Marriot, Mumbai.

The main objective of the Board will be to give advice on substantive issues affecting the development and success of the PGPM Programme. The Board will also assist the PGPM Programme Office in designing the course curriculum in line with industry need and will also help in Positioning of the PGPM programme.

The meeting which was chaired by our Honorable Dean Dr. M.L.Shrikant and presided over by the programme-in-charge Professor Indu Niranjan , saw full attendance of our eminent professors as well as the industry participants who were invited as part of the advisory board panel.

The presence of people entailed above for in meeting, reinforced the standing of SPJIMR brand in market and also saw high level of enthusiasm amongst the industry leaders to contribute back to the academia by providing their inputs on how they want the PGPM programme aimed for experienced professional to shape in future.

Mr. Paritosh Joshi, who is the CEO for Star CJ, was of opinion that the course should be structured in a manner that allows participants to widen the horizon and focus. He believed the course is far too focused while students have come here to seek diversity in their career. According to him the course should enable them to role-play out of life experiences. He also added that Better Generalists are those who know the world. He stressed upon more outward looking attitude needed to be adopted by the institute to have participants work on real-life research project as they go along the course with more emphasis on case study based methodology.

The kind of commitment from industry towards the course was very well reflected by Mr. Ravi Trivedy of KPMG, who also happens to be the visiting faculty for the programme, shuttling between meetings and airport to find time for this event. He reflected back on his teaching experience with the batch and told the board about how students have taken risks after leaving settled job, which reflects on their ability to adorn more challenging roles in future. Apart from imparting project management, in his opinion, he would like to see the student be more sharp in their analytical ability, especially when it comes to pulling apart excel sheets etc. He also wants the institute to hone the marketing skills of the participants so that they can diversify easily and should show ability to weave story line around industry problems. According to him Industry Aligned with Professors – is a Great Opportunity, and with merging markets as the new focus, faculty should direct students to solve real world problems.

Our honorable Dean , also invited couple of our students to the meeting and it turned out to be an excellent idea , as industry leaders were eager to listen from them about what they expected out this course and how they aspired to place themselves in future vis-à-vis their learning from the programme. Vivek , Nitin , Anindya & Prateek spoke well , when they were presented with this opportunity & the faculty as a whole was more than satisfied by the clear direction plus thought process presented by our representatives.

He also saw some relevant challenges which directed at the industry, of which the major one being how to position such participants with peers who are not MBA and still delivering.

As per the feedback which was obtained from faculty and our Honorable Dean, the first interaction of the advisory board members was very successful in meeting it initial objective of providing a common platform aimed at nurturing the PGPM course specifically by taking into consideration views of various industry leaders. It provided lot of insights for academia on how to shape decisions in future regarding PGPM as well as it also provided industry leaders an opportunity to meet the eminent faculty behind PGPM programme. According to us the institute has invested well in this initiative and onus lies on us to leverage as participants of the program by interacting more with the board through mentoring process as well as maintain momentum to have board become more effective in bringing about changes as per industry requirements, so that we achieve higher level of penetration of PGPM brand.

The Application of Learning program(ALP) provides the PGPM participants an opportunity to apply the management concepts picked up during the course of the PGPM program in different areas like strategy,finance,marketing,IT consulting etc to real life industry scenarios.

Our ALP at OTIS India kicked off on Aug 24,2009 for a period of 6 weeks and should I say it was great to get back to cushy offices and the corporate life after the ever-so-hectic, but of course fun-filled college tryst.The CIO of OTIS India is directly mentoring us on the ALP amidst his busy schedule and it has been an exciting 2 weeks so far on the ALP.

Long hours spent discussing the business processes,interacting with the business users,planning the IT roadmap for the company,applying the lenses of IT strategy to a real business scenario has indeed been an enriching experience.

The Mumbai based S.P. Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR)’s one year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM) secured an impressive 100% placement during ALP placements for its 5th batch comprising 55 participants having an average work experience of approximately 6 years.

The companies which hired participants for the ALP programme were Agility Logistics, Aqua MCG, BAeHAL, Conjoin Group, Frost & Sullivan, IDFC, ITC, John Deere, KPIT Cummins, KPMG, L&T HED, L&T Infotech, Loop Mobile, Mobisoc, OTIS, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Siemens, Spanco Telesystems, Spice Digital & Zycus.

5 Students secured international ALP projects in association with Reutlingen University in Germany.

About ALP:

ALP – Application of Learning is a unique programme in the curriculum of PGPM. The programme aims to strengthen the industry-academia relationship. As part of ALP, participants undertake full time projects at company premises for a period of 6 weeks starting 24th August 2009. During this period, the participants take up challenging projects and companies can leverage on the rich experience of participants across diverse domains. At the end of the term, the candidates present a report to the company on which they will be evaluated at the institute.

Management pupils to help ’sitaras’ shine

Mumbai: Around 180 management students of SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) will mentor 90 children from economically weaker sections as part of their course from July 2009.

Called Abhyudaya, the project carries 1.5 credits and the students have to spend
60 hours yearly mentoring the children, called ’sitaras’.

“Children from the deprived sections are adopted from BMC and aided schools. SPJIMR plays the role of a catalyst to give financial and other kind of support so that they can realise their full potential. The main objective is to bring out their strengths till the children complete formal education,” said institute dean ML Shrikant.

Professor Rukaiya Joshi, project leader, said, Abhyudaya, started last year, included effective study habit workshops and disbursement of school and tuition fees.

However, the mentoring programme was initiated in 2009 by students of Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM-1 year) as a non-classroom experiential learning.

“Even as one talks about shining India, there is another section which doesn’t have the basic necessities. It’s here that we need to contribute and take ownership for what we do. This is what we are attempting through Abhyudaya,” said Sachin Deshmukh, student project coordinator, PGPM batch.

Now, the 2009-11 batch of Post Graduate Diploma in Management will mentor 90 children by monitoring the academic growth and teach and guide them in subjects.
Mentors need to prepare mentees for scholarship, competitive/talent exams, encourage extra curricular activities and interact with their family.

Joshi said that even though most B-schools follow KSA (knowledge, skills and attitude) principle, attitude is mostly ignored. “It is also very important to create the right attitude by sensitising students towards social responsiveness. This is what Abhyudaya aims at. It will be growth for both the mentor and the mentee,” she said.

Besides mentoring, each ’sitara’ will receive Rs15,000 yearly till they complete graduation.

“Each year, we’ll adopt 45 children. The idea is to primarily look at BMC school students of Std 7 and work upon their performance so that they can be absorbed in slightly better schools in Std 8. Most municipal schools are only till class 7. The project will subsequently continue till they graduate,” explained Joshi.
